Solving near vision impairment: A step forward

Over 1 billion people worldwide suffer from vision impairment, a significant portion of which could have been prevented or remains unaddressed. Among them, 826 million people are affected by presbyopia, a common condition easily corrected with reading glasses. Shockingly, 90% of these individuals live in impoverished communities without access to vision care.
October 2023 marked a milestone for Healthy Entrepreneurs (H.E.) as the product portfolio for Community Health Entrepreneurs (CHEs) in Uganda was expanded through the launch of the CHE-SEE project. In collaboration with RestoringVision, HE brought a consignment of 50,000 near vision glasses to the market. Dedicated CHEs embarked on selling these reading glasses to community members of Ntumgamu, Luwero, Iganga, Mpigi, Katakwi, Lira, Kalungu, Hoima and Kyankwanzi at an affordable price of $2, aiming to make vision correction accessible to all. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to the CHEs in Hoima and Katatwi districts for standing out in addressing this challenge and supporting our shared mission of addressing the vision crisis in remote communities Uganda and across Africa at large.
Furthermore, special thanks to the efforts of Tumusime Moreen, who has enabled 587 people to acquire a pair of near vision glasses, improving their daily productivity and overall quality of life. This initiative not only provides essential vision correction but also empowers individuals to fully participate in daily activities, like reading their Bible/Quran, fixing thread into the needles, coffee harvesting, sorting of harvests among others.
At H.E. we remain committed to making a positive impact on the lives of those in need. Together with our dedicated CHEs, partners like RestoringVision , and the support of local leaders, we are taking concrete steps to ensure that vision care reaches every corner of Uganda, one pair of glasses at a time. Join us in our mission to create a world where everyone has access to the vision care they need for a brighter future.
