Unlocking access to healthcare

with our innovative approach

Our model goes beyond simply delivering healthcare. It’s a revolutionary approach designed to achieve a dual impact: improving health outcomes in underserved communities while fostering economic growth and job creation. As we’ll see in Amina’s story, the HE model empowers individuals like her to become agents of change in their communities.

Amina’s story is adapted from real-life stories of our CHEs and community members.

Chapter 1: A Need for Change

Amina’s village, like countless others in rural Africa, faces a harsh reality: a severe lack of access to basic healthcare. The nearest clinic is miles away, prohibitively expensive for most villagers. The absence of basic healthcare in Amina’s village casts a long shadow. Witnessing loved ones succumb to illnesses that could be treated with proper care ignites a fire within her. Amina becomes determined to rewrite the narrative for her community, to ensure they have the tools and resources to fight back against preventable diseases.

Chapter 2: Training for Transformation

Motivated by her own experiences, Amina embarks on a journey of transformation. Through the Healthy Entrepreneurs program, she receives comprehensive training in business management, product knowledge, and healthcare provision. This training equips her with the skills to run a successful health business, including using point-of-care diagnostic tools for common diseases, a cornerstone of her service to the community. Each session, from using health apps to managing inventory, is designed to be practical and relevant, providing the tools she needs to succeed. This training is ongoing, ensuring her knowledge and expertise remain current.

Chapter 3: The Tools for Change

Armed with a smartphone and a curated selection of health products provided by Healthy Entrepreneurs, Amina starts her journey as a Community Health Entrepreneur. A commitment fee secures her role, and a starter kit loan, designed for self-sustainability, enables her to serve her community effectively. As her revenues grow, her access to credit increases, while the Solidarity Fund ensures she can maintain supplies during financial challenges. Equipped with marketing tools and point-of-care diagnostic equipment, Amina raises awareness of available health services and builds trust within her community. For any medical questions or doubts, she has access to the telehealth call centre for expert support, ensuring she provides reliable and comprehensive care.

Chapter 4: Health at the Doorstep

Every two weeks, Amina utilizes her smartphone to order new stock, ensuring she has the supplies to meet the needs of her growing clientele. She offers a variety of essential health products, from basic nutrition to malaria prevention. Her services extend beyond simply providing products. Amina follows up with patients, educates them on preventative healthcare measures, and dispenses medication – all while saving them the time and expense of long journeys to distant clinics. She becomes a trusted healthcare resource, offering affordable products and connecting patients with doctors through telehealth services.

Chapter 5: Economic Ripples

As Amina’s business grows, so does her financial stability. Every product she sells allows her to repay credit, build her savings, and support her family by paying school fees and purchasing garden inputs. Her business has evolved into a self-sustaining enterprise, creating jobs and establishing her as a respected leader in her community.

The availability of health services and products locally has improved hygiene,
sanitation, and access to primary healthcare, saving villagers money on healthcare and transportation costs. Amina’s journey showcases the transformative power of the Healthy Entrepreneurs model—a scalable, sustainable approach that makes healthcare a fundamental right for all, not a privilege for a few

Chapter 6: Integration in national health system

Amina’s work as a Community Health Worker seamlessly integrates with the national health program, complementing government efforts to expand access to care. She dedicates 15-20 additional hours weekly to community health while maintaining time for other income-generating activities. The Healthy Entrepreneurs model is designed to align with Ministry of Health guidelines, offering products, services, and training that supplement free government services. Local governments support the recruitment and supervision of entrepreneurs like Amina, who report their activities to referral health facilities and log them in the national Community Health Information System, ensuring accountability and alignment with national health goals.

Amina’s journey is a testament to the transformative power of the Healthy Entrepreneurs model. It’s a scalable, adaptable, and impactful approach to delivering essential healthcare to underserved communities. Amina’s story represents a future where healthcare is not a privilege for the few, but a fundamental right for all.
